Monsters Come Up Short In RematchTweet01/11/2013 10:09 PM
Twenty four hours after defeating the Rampage by a 5-1 score, the Lake Erie Monsters fell 4-2 in San Antonio on Friday night, despite goaltender Calvin Pickard making 38 saves. Dean Strong scored for the second straight night, and newly-added forward Matt Tassone picked up his first American Hockey League goal, but it wasn't enough to top the Rampage.
San Antonio scored twice within 12 seconds in the first period, with goals from James Wright at 12:28 and Jon Rheault at 12:40 on the power play. With the pair of quick tallies, San Antonio led 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Pickard made 19 saves in the first period for the Monsters.
Just as he did on Thursday in San Antonio, Strong scored the first goal of the night for the Monsters when he hammered home a rebound at 1:40 of the second period, with assists to Mike Connolly and Cameron Gaunce. The goal was the third of the season for Strong.
Tassone tied the game on a put-back for the Monsters with his first AHL goal at 3:24 of the second period. Strong and Thomas Pock were credited with the helpers. A rebound darted to the right circle, and Tassone sent a slapshot past San Antonio goalie Dov Grumet-Morris.
San Antonio regained a two-goal lead by scoring twice in the first 3:29 of the third period with goals from Drew Shore and Rheault.
Pickard's personal four-game win streak comes to a close with the loss; he stopped 38 of 42 shots, and is now 10-9-1. Grumet-Morris stopped 19 of 21 Monsters shots, and is 5-7-2 on the campaign for San Antonio.
The Monsters will finish their current three-games-in-three-nights stretch Saturday night in Houston against the Aeros at 8:00 PM Eastern, with all of the game's action airing live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
