Former Monster Bacashihua Hoists Calder

>
On Monday night, former Monsters goalie Jason Bacashihua became the seventh one-time Monster in franchise history to win the Calder Cup. Bacashihua did so as a member of the Hershey Bears, and the championship marks Hershey’s AHL-leading 11th Calder Cup.

Bacashihua joins former Monsters Marc Cavosie (2003, Houston Aeros); Brian Fahey (2008, Chicago Wolves); John Grahame (1999, Providence Bruins); Darren Haydar (2004, Milwaukee Admirals, 2008, Chicago Wolves); Dale Purinton (2000, Hartford Wolf Pack); and Wyatt Smith (2004, Milwaukee Admirals) as players who have suited up for Lake Erie that have a Calder Cup on their resume.

In 2009-10, Bacashihua appeared in 22 games with the Bears, going 17-3-1 while posting a 0.911 save percentage and 2.48 GAA. In his two years with the Monsters, from 2007-09, Bacashihua went 18-32-5 to go with a 2.96 GAA and a 0.905 save percentage.

The only two-time Calder Cup champ to suit up for the Monsters, Haydar also won the AHL’s top team award with a future Lake Erie player each time, as Smith was on the 2004 Admirals team that hoisted the Cup with Haydar and Fahey joined Haydar in winning the illustrious trophy in the Windy City in 2008. In 2009-10 with Lake Erie, Haydar put up 64 points (23G, 41A) in 66 games, finishing second on the team in goals, assists, and points.

In 2007-08, Haydar posted 58 points (19G, 39A) in the regular season with the Wolves before turning it up and notching 27 points (12G, 15A) in 24 games in the playoffs en route to the Calder Cup. In 2003-04, Haydar recorded 59 points (22G, 37A) in 79 regular season games with Milwaukee before registering 26 points (11G, 15A) in 22 playoff games. Haydar captained the 2008 Wolves team that won the Calder Cup and holds the AHL’s all-time record for postseason points with 135 (59G, 76A).

Joining Haydar in Milwaukee in 2003-04, Smith posted 16 points (9G, 7A) in 40 regular season games before tallying 12 points (5G, 7A) in 22 playoff games. In the Monsters inaugural 2007-08 season, Smith, Lake Erie’s captain, posted 35 points (17G, 18A) in 40 games.

Helping to anchor Chicago’s backline in 2007-08, Fahey was responsible for 37 points (14G, 23A) in 76 regular season games with the Wolves before tallying 10 points (2G, 8A) in 24 games in the 2008 playoffs. A staple of the Monsters defense in 2009-10, Fahey notched 25 points (11G, 14A) in 71 regular season games with the Monsters.

A physical force for the Monsters in 2007-08, Purinton put up eight points (4G, 4A) and 415 penalty minutes in 62 regular season games for the Wolf Pack in 1999-00 prior to recording three assists and 87 penalty minutes in 23 postseason contests with Hartford. In Lake Erie’s first season, Purinton recorded four assists and 193 penalty minutes in 35 regular season contests.

A two-way center, Cavosie recorded 19 points (5G, 14A) in his rookie season with the Aeros in 2002-03 before recording eight points (3G, 5A) in 19 games on the way to winning the AHL title. In a 16-game stint with the Monsters in the early stages of the 2009-10 regular season, Cavosie tallied two assists and six penalty minutes in 16 games with Lake Erie.

Before entering the new millennium, Grahame picked up a title with Providence in 1999. In 48 games with the Bruins in 1998-99, Grahame posted a 2.90 GAA and a 0.896 save percentage to go with a 37-9-1 mark. In 14 games with the Monsters in 2009-10, Grahame went 4-7-3 and put up a 3.44 GAA and a 0.884 save percentage.

Named for Frank Calder, who served as the NHL’s President from 1917-1943, the Calder Cup has been presented to the AHL champion since the 1936-37 season. The city of Cleveland has the second-most titles in AHL history, as the Cleveland Barons won the Calder Cup nine times.
