Weekend Ends with a Loss for Monsters

Playing their third home game in as many days and having won the first two, the Lake Erie Monsters dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest against the Abbotsford Heat at Quicken Loans Arena on Sunday. The game was Lake Erie’s first in franchise history against the Heat.

Abbotsford left wing Colin Stuart began the scoring, notching his fourth goal of the season at the 12:04 mark of the first. Taking a pass from former Monsters player Jamie Lundmark at the point, Stuart snapped a wrist shot past the glove of Monsters goalie Tyler Weiman from below the left hash marks. Jason Jaffray picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

The Heat would pad their lead with Mikael Backlund’s fifth goal of the season 6:01 into regulation’s middle frame. Standing five feet outside of Weiman’s crease, Backlund one-timed a feed from Brett Sutter through Weiman’s five hole. Carsen Germyn recorded the second helper on the goal.

Heading into the third and down by two, David Marshall put the Monsters on the scoreboard, registering his third point in the past two games with his second goal of the season at the 16:19 mark of the third. Taking advantage of a turnover at the blue line, Marshall blazed down the right wing and fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Heat goalie Leland Irving. Marc Cavosie and Tom Fritsche picked up the assists on the goal. It was Fritsche’s second straight game with an assist.

Keeping on the offensive, Weiman was in and out of the Monsters net during the last 75 seconds of the game for an extra attacker, but the effort wasn’t enough, as the game ended with a 2-1 score in favor of the Heat. The Monsters ended the month of October with a 6-6-0-0 record.

“We seem to come back and fight adversity and that’s a good sign,” said Monsters head coach David Quinn. “I wish we had turned it on earlier. But we played three games in three days, and got four of six points, so I’ll take that.”

The Monsters next game is slated for Friday, November 6th against the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 p.m. at The Q. Tickets can be purchased by calling (216) 420-2000 or by visiting LakeErieMonsters.com or by visiting any Northern Ohio Discount Drug Mart.
