Monsters Five-Game Point Streak Ends in Milwaukee

The Lake Erie Monsters (28-29-0-8) saw their five-game point streak come to a halt with a 4-3 regulation loss to the Milwaukee Admirals (32-21-6-7) Friday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Following the regulation loss, the Monsters remain seven points behind the Charlotte Checkers, who were idle Friday and currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Monsters have played 65 games, while Charlotte has played 67 games. Scoring in Friday’s loss for the Monsters were Markus Lauridsen, Mark Olver, and Andrew Agozzino. The Monsters play the third game of their seven-game road swing tomorrow in Chicago against the Wolves at 8:00 PM Eastern.

In his first game for the Monsters since January 11, Markus Lauridsen opened the scoring with a wrist shot from the high slot at 4:18 of the first period, with assists to Andrew Agozzino and Mark Olver. The goal was the third of the season for Lauridsen, who had been out with an upper body injury.

Milwaukee would tie the game on a Vinny Saponari goal at 17:50 of the first period, but with 57 seconds left in the frame, Lauridsen found Olver open in the slot, and Olver snapped a puck top-shelf to regain the one-goal lead for the Monsters, making the score 2-1. The goal was the 14th of the season for Olver.

In the second period, the Monsters were victimized by an unfortunate bounce off the end boards behind Sami Aittokallio, as a puck played up the boards darted to the top of the goal crease and was tapped in by Milwaukee forward Austin Watson to tie the game at 2-2 at 10:27 of the period. Patrick Cehlin gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead with 0.7 seconds left in the second period when he ripped a high shot from the right boards for a power play goal.

Taylor Beck gave Milwaukee a 4-2 lead with 12:28 left in the third period when he received an Austin Watson pass on a rush and snapped a shot into the net from the right circle. The Monsters got one goal back when Andrew Agozzino sent a puck toward the net from the left wing corner off Admirals goalie Marek Mazanec and over the line at 12:44 of the third period, but they were unable to tie the game. Agozzino’s goal pulled the Monsters to within 4-3, and was his 13th goal of the season.

Sami Aittokallio stopped 24 of 28 shots in net for the Monsters; he is 12-12-3 on the season. Marek Mazanec stopped 21 of 24 Monsters shots in the Milwaukee win; he is 14-9-3 in the Admirals net.

The Monsters continue their season-long seven-game road trip Saturday night in Chicago against the Wolves; the game begins at 8:00 PM Eastern and airs live on AM 1220 WHKW.
