Rochester would counter again, as Frederick Roy scored on a scramble in front of the Monsters net, tying the game at 2-2 at 11:54 of the second period.
Rochester broke the tie at 11:14 of the second period when Johan Larsson fired a slapshot past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard from the left wing circle at 11:14 of the third period, but the Monsters countered 25 seconds later. Stefan Elliott’s point shot was deflected by Bryan Lerg, who netted his ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3. Along with Elliott, Dan Maggio collected an assist on the goal.
Phil Varone scored the eventual game-winning goal for Rochester at 18:02 of the third period, giving Rochester the 5-3 lead. Varone took possession following a wild bounce off the glass, skated to the slot, and sent a wrister in for the goal. With one minute left, Rochester’s Jamie Tardif netted an empty-net goal to give the Americans a 5-3 lead.
Calvin Pickard stopped 26 of 30 shots in the loss; he is 5-6-1. Nathan Lieuwen stopped 33 of 36 Monsters shots, and is 5-3-0 in net for the Americans this season.
