Monsters Shutout Griffins, 2-0

LEM vs. GRG PreseasonTim Cornett

Calvin Pickard stopped all 27 shots he faced Sunday night, securing a 2-0 victory for the Lake Erie Monsters over the Grand Rapids Griffins in the Monsters preseason finale. The game was played at WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, and completed a preseason back-to-back with the Griffins; Grand Rapids bested Lake Erie, 3-2 in a shootout, Saturday night in Plymouth, Michigan. Sunday’s contest saw the Monsters net a pair of power play goals: one from forward Mark Olver and one from defenseman Markus Lauridsen. Stefan Elliott, Paul Carey, Olver, and Mike Sgarbossa had assists in the win for the Monsters.

After scoring twice on the power play in Saturday’s game, the Monsters had success early in Sunday’s game with the man-advantage as well. At 7:09 of the first period, with the Monsters on the power play, Elliott snapped a puck from the center point that was tipped by Olver, and the puck got past Griffins goalie Jared Coreau’s glove-side for the game’s first goal. Elliott and Carey assisted on Olver’s tally, which gave the Monsters a 1-0 lead; a lead they would hold through one period of play.

With 30 seconds left in the second period and the Monsters on the power play again, Olver held the puck in the right wing corner and spotted Lauridsen darting through the left circle. Olver sent a perfect pass onto the tape of Lauridsen, who sent the puck top-shelf for the Monsters second goal of the evening. Sgarbossa also assisted on the goal.

The third period yielded no scoring, as Pickard stopped all 10 shots he saw in the third to preserve his shutout.

Pickard stopped 27 of 27 shots in the game, while Coreau stopped 19 of 21 in net for Grand Rapids.

The Monsters will open the regular season Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena, with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m., against Abbotsford.
