Wall and Monsters Shut Down Syracuse

These guys should have been tired.

And maybe they were, but they sure didn't show it.

Playing their fourth game in the span of five nights, the Monsters looked anything but tired as they utterly dominated the Crunch on the their own ice on Monday.  Lake Erie shut out Syracuse, 5-0, and with the win, moved into fifth place in the North Division.

Monday was the sixth meeting between the division rivals, and heading into the game Lake Erie was 2-2-1-0 against the Crunch, with both wins happening in Syracuse.  At the beginning of the night, Syracuse was sitting comfortably in fourth place in the North, 10 points ahead of Lake Erie, who seemed to be staying put at six.  But at the end of the night, Monday's two points pushed the Monsters into fifth place, ahead of Grand Rapids, for the first time all season. They are now just eight points behind the Crunch, and have been putting up their fair share of points as of late.  Lake Erie has only lost in regulation three times in the last 16 games.

Skating on what should have been tired legs, Lake Erie jumped the gun and got on the board just two minutes into the game.  Wyatt Smith scored on a one-timer at 2:01 of the first period.

That would be the end of the scoring for both teams for a very long time.

The teams went two full periods without anyone lighting the lamp.  Forty two minutes after his first goal, Smith did the honors again, finally ending the scoring drought at 4:10 of the third period.  His marker, assisted by Mark McCutcheon, would start the tidal wave of Lake Erie scoring in the period.

Shortly thereafter, Ray Macias connected with the back of the net at 6:42.  He was assisted by none other than Smith, who has now posted eight points in the last five games.  Dan DaSilva was also credited with an assist on the goal, his fourth point in as many games.

The final period was chock full of penalties, a whopping 25 to be exact, so there were a plentitude of power plays, particularly in favor of the Monsters.  Eric Healey made the Crunch pay, scoring on the power play at 12:47.  Healey leads the Monsters in scoring with 32 points (13G, 19A), including six points in the last five games.  Jamie Lundmark and Jeff Jillson were credited with the assists.

Brad Richardson also cashed in on the advantage, putting the Monsters on the board for the fifth and final time of the night at the 16:50 mark.  Lundmark again assisted, as did Macias.  Lundmark has now recorded eight points in the past six games for Lake Erie.

Mike Wall was perfect in goal for the Monsters, recording his first shutout in a Lake Erie sweater.  He rejected all 32 shots he faced on the night.  The game was the fourth overall shutout recorded by the team this season (Tyler Weiman, 2; Jason Bacashihua, 1).  Crunch goalie Dan LaCosta posted 22 saves on 27 shots.

Monday was the third of a five-game roadie for Lake Erie.  Next they will travel to San Antonio for games on Friday and Sunday.
