Hello again Monsters fans and welcome to this week’s edition of the Monsters “Calls of the Week”. The Monsters played their only three games in three days home stand of the 2010-11 season last weekend. They kicked things off on Friday against the San Antonio Rampage. Friday’s game marked the third meeting of the season between the two teams. San Antonio won a pair of one-goal games in October down at the AT & T Center. Friday night the Monsters opened the scoring at The Q at 6:59 of the opening period when Harrison Reed scored his second goal of the season on a rebound in front of Rampage goaltender Matt Climie. Here’s how the goal sounded on ESPN 850 WKNR.

Then, with the game tied at 2-2 midway through the second period, rookie Luke Walker made an amazing play to track down a pass from Cameron Gaunce and gave the Monsters a 3-2 lead with a highlight reel goal. Here’s how that go-ahead goal sounded.

The goal was Walker’s seventh of the season, but the Rampage battled back for two goals in less than a minute to take the lead, and they held on for a 4-3 win over the Monsters.

The two teams met again at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at The Q and the Rampage came out with the upper hand early in the game when they built a 2-0 lead. But early in the second period, during a 5-on-3 power play, Rookie Joel Chouinard ripped home the Monsters first goal of the game. It came just seconds after Monsters TV analyst Jock Callander commented how good Chouinard can shoot the puck. Here’s the call of that goal as heard on MY43 WUAB and ESPN 850 WKNR.

With San Antonio leading 3-1 at the start of the third period, the Monsters came out firing on all cylinders early in the third period. Travis Gawryletz ripped a shot from the right point after Mike Carman fed him the puck off a face off in the San Antonio zone. The face-off was won by Patrick Bordeleau, who then went to the front of the net and tipped in the Gawryletz blast off the goal post to make it at 3-2 game. Here’s how that play sounded.

The Monsters continued on the attack after Bordeleau got credit for his first goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Bordeleau picked up an assist as super sniper Mark Olver tied the game with his team-leading 21st goal of the season to even the score at 3-3. Here’s the call of that goal.

San Antonio took a one-goal lead back from there and with the score 4-3, Defenseman Matt Generous got the puck at the right point in the San Antonio zone and blasted a low shot that beat goaltender Al Montoya. Here’s how the game tying goal sounded.

The Monsters made a great comeback in Saturday’s game and to kill of a 4-on-3 power play to start overtime. The overtime session saw no goals scored and the game went to a shootout. San Antonio Defenseman Garrett Stafford, the first shooter for the Rampage, scored the only goal in the shootout for either team. The Monsters lost 5-4 but did manage to earn a hard-fought and well-deserved point.

The Monsters closed out their three games in three days weekend on Super Bowl Sunday against North Division rival Abbotsford. It was the third meeting of the season between the Monsters and Heat. Abbotsford, British Columbia native David van der Gulik, who played last season in a Heat uniform, opening the scoring for the Monsters late in the first period. The goal was Van Der Gulik’s sixth of the season and it gave the Monsters a 1-0 lead. It was van der Gulik’s first game back after missing the previous five games. The Monsters took a 2-0 lead 14 seconds later when Matt Ford banged in his second goal in three games and 13th of the season. The Heat cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period when Cam Cunning knocked in a rebound off a Keith Seabrook shot, but four minutes later, Defenseman Kevin Montgomery ripped a slap shot from just inside the Abbotsford blue line to put the Monsters up 3-1. The goal proved to be the game winner in the Monsters 3-2 win. Here’s the call of Montgomery’s goal.

Montgomery was named the first star of the game and the goal was his second of the season and first since November 27th at home against the Oklahoma City Barons. Later in the third period Monsters forward and enforcer Patrick Bordeleau dropped the gloves at center ice with Heat defenseman Matt Pelech, and like he always does, Bordeleau dominated the fight, making quick work of Pelech. With the 3-2 win, the Monsters moved to three games over the .500 mark and maintained third place in the North Division. As of Monday, they were just three points back of second place Hamilton and four points back of first place Manitoba. The Monsters are back on the ice Saturday night at The Q at 7:30 p.m. when they will face North Division rival Grand Rapids. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports Ohio and ESPN 850 WKNR with Ben Holden and Monsters TV analyst Sean Ritchlin.
