Completing their previously suspended game from March 21st Monday night at Hoover Arena in Strongsville, the Lake Erie Monsters dropped a 5-2 contest against the San Antonio Rampage to finish 1-3 against the Rampage this season. Lake Erie’s all-time record dropped to 2-3-1 against San Antonio.

“Under the circumstances, both teams competed very hard,” said Monsters head coach Joe Sacco.

In the original game on March 21st, San Antonio defenseman Sean Zimmerman opened the scoring, notching his first goal of the season and of his professional career at the 17:34 mark of the first period. Joel Perrault notched the lone assist on the goal.

The game resumed with the Rampage ahead 1-0 at the start of the second period on Monday. Perrault would find the score sheet at the 10:38 mark of the second, recording his 17th goal of the season on the power play. Standing to the right of Monsters goalie Tyler Weiman, Perrault one-timed a cross-ice feed from Kevin Porter to put San Antonio up, 2-0. Kevin Porter was also credited with an assist.

But the Monsters would answer less than two minutes later, when Darcy Campbell fired a laser past the glove of San Antonio goalie Josh Tordjman. Hustling up ice to catch up to a two-on-two break into the Rampage zone, Campbell took a feed from Matt Hendricks as the trailer on what became an odd-man break. With the puck in the high slot, Campbell blew a wrist shot past the glove of Tordjman, cutting the Rampage lead in half going into the final frame of regulation play. Phil Dupuis picked up the secondary assist on the goal, recording a point in his sixth consecutive game. Dupuis now has put up 13 points (3G, 10A) in the past 14 games.

Per Ledin would tie the game with his first shorthanded goal of the season and 11th overall at the 2:25 mark of the third. Digging for the puck against two San Antonio defenders in the corner, Ledin threw the puck to the net from below the goal line that careened off the stick of Tordjman and into the net.

The jostling for scoreboard supremacy continued after Ledin’s goal, with an all-too familiar name to the score sheet – Joel Perrault – putting the Rampage ahead at the 10:38 mark of the third with his second of the game and 18th of the season. Sitting at the top of the faceoff dot, Perrault took a pass from defenseman David Schlemko and one-timed a missile past the glove of Weiman. Kevin Porter recorded the secondary assist on the goal.

Pulling the goalie, the Monsters would be the victim of two empty net goals to end the game, as former Monster Wyatt Smith and Sean Sullivan both put the biscuit into an empty basket in the final 40 seconds of the game, with Smith’s tally coming at the 19:23 mark and Sullivan icing the game with 19 seconds left.

The Monsters wrap up the season with their last road game of the year on Wednesday when they travel to Allstate Arena in Chicago to play the defending Calder Cup champion Chicago Wolves Lake Erie will play their final game on Saturday, April 11th at The Q at 7:30 p.m.
