Monsters Top Stars in Shootout, 3-2

Scoresheet

Michael Schumacher scored in regulation and in the shootout, and Calvin Pickard stopped all four shootout attempts as the Lake Erie Monsters (23-25-0-5) defeated the Western Conference leading Texas Stars (33-16-3-5) in a shootout by a 3-2 score Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena. Stefan Elliott also scored for the Monsters, who have points in four of their last five games. The Monsters are back in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Hamilton against the Bulldogs.

Schumacher opened the scoring for the Monsters when he received a centering pass off the rush from Paul Carey, and directed the puck past Texas goalie Cristopher Nilstorp at 8:43 of the opening period. The goal was Schumacher's third of the season, and gives him points in three straight games.

The Monsters led 1-0 into the second period, but Texas tied the game at 1-1 when Curtis McKenzie scored at the 14:34 mark. Colton Sceviour's shot from the left circle deflected off McKenzie and past Pickard, and the game remained tied until a Texas power play early in the third period.

With the Stars on a five-on-three power play, Chris Mueller received a back-door pass from Travis Morin, and scored to give Texas a 2-1 lead at 3:41 of the final period. The lead was short-lived, as the Monsters tied the game at 2-2 when Stefan Elliott scored on a top-shelf wrist shot from the left circle at 7:24 of the third period. The goal was the eighth of the season for Elliott, and was assisted by Karl Stollery and Mike Sgarbossa on the power play.

Overtime did not yield a winner, but in the shootout, the Monsters outscored Texas 2-0. Colin Smith improved to 7-10 in shootouts this season, while Schumacher also scored.

Pickard stopped 34 of 36 shots in the Monsters win; he is now 13-14-3 on the season. Nilstorp stopped 31 of 33 Monsters shots, and is now 20-12-4 on the season.

The Monsters visit Hamilton Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
