Monsters Can't Stop the HeatTweet02/01/2013 9:01 PM
The Lake Erie Monsters (24-17-2-2) six-game unbeaten-in-regulation streak - the longest such streak in the American Hockey League entering Friday - came to a halt as the Monsters fell to the Abbotsford Heat (23-14-3-4), 4-1, before a crowd of 13,258 fans at Quicken Loans Arena. Brad Malone scored for the second straight game for the Lake Erie. With the Abbotsford win, the Heat reclaimed the top spot in the North Division from the Monsters. Ben Street scored on a one-timer from the right circle for the Heat on a five-on-three power play to give Abbotsford a 1-0 lead at 4:37 of the first period; a lead that would stand through one period despite the Monsters leading the shots on net 14-10 through 20 minutes. At 2:28 of the second period, Tyler Ruegsegger followed the rebound from a Brady Lamb shot and backhanded a puck past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to extend the Heat lead to 2-0. Abbotsford was able to net another early-period goal in the third frame when Paul Byron converted a rebound opportunity at 2:06 to give the Heat a 3-0 lead.
Malone scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 7:38 of the third period for his eighth goal of the season to make the score 3-1, but it was all the scoring the Monsters would muster against Abbotsford goalie Danny Taylor. Brett Olson scored an empty-netter for the Heat with five seconds remaining to secure the 4-1 win for Abbotsford. Pickard suffered the loss, stopping 25 of 28; he is 13-10-1. Taylor stopped 23 of 24 Monsters shots, improving to 12-8-1 for Abbotsford. The Monsters are back on the ice Tuesday at The Q against the Hershey Bears, with the puck dropping at 7:00 PM. All the action Tuesday can be heard live on AM 1220 WHKW. NOTES: With the loss, the Monsters are now 5-1-0-1 in their last seven games and 12-4-0-1 in their last 17 games...
