After falling to Oklahoma City in overtime on Friday night, the Lake Erie Monsters spelled revenge by rattling off three power play goals en route to a 5-3 victory over the Barons in Saturday’s rematch at Quicken Loans Arena. Three power play tallies in a game ties a season high for the Monsters, who have netted eight goals in their last five games with the man advantage.

With the win, Lake Erie has claimed five of a possible six points in their last three games, improving to 11-9-2-2 overall and 6-3-2-1 on home ice.

Lake Erie jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 7:49 of the first period when center Mark Olver buried a rebound from the right doorstep. Olver’s team-leading ninth goal of the season came as his second in as many games. He took assists from David Liffiton and Patrick Rissmiller.

With just 43 seconds remaining in the period, the Monsters scored a power play goal to take a 2-0 lead. Travis Gawryletz fired a shot from the left point and Ryan Stoa chipped in the rebound for his fifth goal of the season. Rissmiller also assisted, marking his third helper in as many games, along with his first multi-point game of the season as a Monster.

Neither team scored in the second period, but Lake Erie’s defense was tested by 14 Oklahoma City shots. The Monsters only recorded three at the other end, which marks a season low for shots in a single period by the team.

The third period began with a four-on-three power play for the Barons and they scored just :36 into the frame. Jeff Petry took a pass from Brad Moran and netted a one-timer from the left hash mark, making the score 2-1. Alexandre Giroux also recorded an assist on the goal.

At 3:42 of the period, Moran tied the game at two goals apiece when he placed a slap shot into the top left corner of the net from the right circle.

Lake Erie answered just 38 seconds later when Ben Walter jammed in a loose puck from the right side of the goal crease, putting Lake Erie up 3-2. Walter’s tally came as his seventh of the season and he was assisted by Cameron Gaunce and Julian Talbot. Gaunce has recorded back-to-back points (2A) with his helper.

The Monsters regained their two-goal lead when Kevin Montgomery scored his first of the season to make the score 4-2. Montgomery’s tally came on the power play and was assisted by Olver and Luke Walker. Montgomery has recorded at least a point in six of his last eight games (1G, 6A). With a goal and an assist in the game, Olver has notched nine points (6G, 3A) in his last eight outings. Walker’s assist marks his first back-to-back points of the season, as he scored his third goal of the season in Friday’s game.

At 10:19, the Barons cut their deficit in half as Colin McDonald made the score 4-3. McDonald, who scored Oklahoma City’s game-tying and game-winning goals on Friday, was assisted by Giroux.

With 2:15 remaining in regulation, Stoa finalized a 5-3 score sheet with his second power play goal of the game. Stoa’s tally came as his second two-goal outing in his past three games and he was assisted by Talbot and Gawryletz. Stoa has scored six goals in his last six games. With two assists, Talbot registered his second two-assist game in his last three outings, marking his fourth multi-point game of the season. With two helpers, Gawryletz notched his first multi-point game of the season.

Trevor Cann made his fifth start of the season for Lake Erie, posting 28 saves on 31 shots. Cann’s overall record stands at 2-3-0.

Oklahoma City’s Jeff Deslauriers made his fifth consecutive start in goal, turning aside 13 of Lake Erie’s 18 shots.

Saturday’s contest wrapped up an 11-day stretch in which the Monsters played eight games. Lake Erie will be idle until Friday, December 3rd, when they host the Chicago Wolves for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff.
