Certainly one of Colorado’s most highly-touted prospects, defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk joined the Monsters for the final three games of the season after spending three years at Boston University.
Signed to an amateur tryout contract on April 5th, Shattenkirk recorded two assists and notched two shootout scores in his first three games as a pro with the Monsters.
Known for his effortless stride, Shattenkirk also possesses natural leadership qualities, as he was the Terriers captain prior to coming to Cleveland.
Selected by Colorado in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft in 2007 (14th overall), Shattenkirk is lauded for his offensive upside. During his time in Boston in 2009-10, Shattenkirk quarterbacked the BU power play and was second on the Terrier squad with 22 assists while finishing up with 29 points.
The highlight of Shattenkirk’s collegiate career came in the spring of 2009, when, along with Monsters teammates Zach Cohen and Colby Cohen and head coach David Quinn, who was BU’s associate head coach at the time, Shattenkirk and the Terriers won the NCAA National Championship.
Should Shattenkirk begin his first full season as a pro in Cleveland, the Monsters will rely on the young blueliner for top-four minutes, and will give the 21-year-old an abundance of experience in various situations.
