Coach Sacco Writes from Avs Camp

Monsters head coach Joe Sacco spent last week out in Colorado at the Avalanche's 2008 Player Development Camp.  He was kind enough to fill in on the happenings up top.

Well we had a great week in Denver. The players that attend this camp are either draft picks of the organization or first-year pro players. Some of the players that made it who spent time with us last year with the Monsters were Hensick, Jones, Stewart, Campbell, Macias, Corbin, McCutcheon, Montgomery, Peltier, Burki, O'Neill and Drummond. The other names you may see in a few years.

We do off-ice testing to give us an idea of where these players stand as far as their fitness levels are concerned. Once we get the results we sit down with each player individually and try to come up with a plan that will help them better understand what it takes to be in great hockey shape for their upcoming season.

There are also classes that are designed to help better educate the guys on nutrition (like what to eat before games and after games). We found that most guys don't have enough information on what types of food they should put into their bodies to get the most out of their performance. They will meet individually with a nutritionist to help put a plan in place and get them started out in the right direction.

There is also an on-ice portion where we slow things down the first two days and try to work with the players on a few areas that we as a staff feel are critical for young players to learn. The next two days we pick up the intensity of the practice to show them what it is like to practice at a higher tempo than they may be used to. The last day we had a scrimmage game against each other. We try to let the boys have some fun on this day and just enjoy the game.

So as you can see there is a lot going on during the week.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that we had a chance to play golf one of the days as well!
