Monsters Back To .500 With Win Over Heat

Three unanswered goals propelled the Lake Erie Monsters (4-4-0-0) to a 3-1 road victory over the Abbotsford Heat (4-4-0-1) Saturday night. Joey Hishon scored for the second straight game, netting the eventual game-winning tally in the second period. Mark Olver registered three assists in the victory for the Monsters, who earned a split of the four-game season series against Abbotsford with the win. After a 4-2 loss to the Heat on Friday night, Saturday’s win also brought the Monsters back to .500 on the season.

Abbotsford struck first in the opening period when Corban Knight banked a puck past Calvin Pickard from the side of the net, giving Abbotsford a 1-0 lead on the power play at 9:46 of the frame. Just as the Heat did the previous night against the Monsters, they took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Monsters tied the game at 1-1 on the power play when Andrew Agozzino sent a pass from the left wing circle to Mike Sgarbossa near the bottom of the right circle, and Sgarbossa one-timed the puck past Abbotsford goalie Reto Berra for his first goal of the season. Sgarbossa's goal, from a very sharp angle, was assisted by Agozzino and Olver at 3:58 of the second.

A great passing display led to the Monsters second goal of the second period, which gave them a 2-1 lead at 4:56 of the frame. Olver sent a pass up the ice to Guillaume Desbiens, cutting toward the goal on the right side. Without hesitation, Desbiens tapped a pass to the left for Hishon, who one-timed the puck past Berra. Hishon's goal was his second of the season and second in as many games.

Olver set up another Monsters goal early in the third period. At the 4:55 mark, Olver was able to spring Desbiens on a breakaway, and Desbiens beat Berra top-shelf to give the Monsters a 3-1 lead with his first goal of the season and his first with Lake Erie. Mikael Tam also assisted on the goal; his first point in a Monsters uniform.

Pickard stopped 23 of 24 shots in net to preserve the win, including some key stops late in the game; he is 2-2-0 on the season. Berra is 4-3-1 after taking the loss; he stopped 24 of 27 shots.

NOTES: The win on Saturday earns Lake Erie a split of the season series against Abbotsford, as they finish the four-game season set with a 2-2-0-0 record... Agozzino has six assists and seven points over his last five games after a helper Saturday... Olver's three assists give him five on the season in eight games... Desbiens' multi-point game is his first in a Monsters uniform... The Monsters were 1-3 on the power play and now have nine power play goals in eight games this season... The Monsters were 4-5 on the penalty kill.
