Monsters Loss Marks Sixth StraightTweet03/27/2012 6:19 PM
Ryan Stoa found Gaunce open at the top of the Texas goal crease at 13:15 of the opening period for the game’s first goal, as Gaunce tapped the puck over the line to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season. Brad Malone also assisted on the goal and the Monsters would end the first period with the 1-0 lead. Texas scored twice off Monsters turnovers in a span of 2:13 in the closing minutes of the second period, with goals being credited to Travis Morin and Mike Hedden. Morin’s goal was a shorthanded tally. Texas took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Malone foiled a Stars clearing attempt early in the third period, and eventually found Mauldin with the puck at the side of the net. Mauldin banged the puck home for his 16th goal of the season at the 3:54 mark, with assists going to Malone and Karl Stollery. Stollery’s assist was his first professional assist and point. Less than four minutes later, Texas’ Francis Wathier poke-checked Monsters defenseman Danny Richmond, causing a puck to roll away from Richmond, under Monsters goalie Cedrick Desjardins, and into the Monsters net to give Texas a 3-2 lead. With 1:59 left, Connolly fired in a rebound to tie the game for the Monsters at 3-3. Barry Goers and Stoa assisted on Connolly’s 11th AHL goal of the season. Overtime didn’t yield a winner, despite the Monsters outshooting Texas 8-0, but the Stars outscored the Monsters 3-2 in the shootout portion to secure the win and the two points. Stoa and Connolly converted for the Monsters in the shootout. Desjardins is 12-9-5 after stopping 28 of 31 shots. Jack Campbell, the 11th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, is 2-1-0 after stopping 36 of 39 shots in his third professional start. The Monsters are back in action Thursday night when they begin a three-game road trip - the final three road games of the regular season - with an 8:05 puck drop in Houston against the Aeros. All the action can be heard live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
